In a small step away from oil-based transportation, automakers displayed a wide array of electric cars at this year’s Paris Motor Show.  The green statement is a far cry from a recent history that included lobbying against stricter MPG and emissions standards.

Although 19 models were showcased, many were concept models and only a handful will be ready for production within the next few years.   The major production challenges are to improve battery technology to meet cost and weight requirements, and to ensure a suitable power infrastructure.  However, the auto industry is banking on promising developments in lithium-ion cell technology and power company cooperation.

GM plans to be one of the first to market with the rechargeable electric Chevrolet Volt (pictured above), which it says will go on sale in late 2010.   A battery vendor has not been chosen yet by GM, but the company has announced specifications of 40 miles per charge and 3 hours for a full recharge.

Below are images of notable auto models seen in Paris, and links to additional information about each.
